JROTC is a Leadership and Character Development Program. 

The program of instruction is taught using the latest instructional technologies and focuses on student-centered learning in a structured environment. Through participation in the learning process, cadets are able to get a deeper understanding of the subjects and how they may apply what they have learned. 

Co-curricular activities include Color Guard Teams, Drill Teams, Raider Challenge Team, Academic Team, Leadership Team, Cadet Challenge Competitions, Leadership/Adventure Training Events, field trips, an annual District JROTC Military Ball, and an optional JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge.

In addition to an elective credit for the course, Cadets may also earn one physical education credit for being in the corps for two years. Cadets can also earn a varsity letter for competing on the teams. They also earn rank and JROTC awards for their achievements. Certification of a cadet's physical health is a requirement to enroll in the class. 

The JROTC program prepares high school students for responsible leadership roles while making them aware of their rights, responsibilities, and privilege as American citizens. The program is a stimulus for promoting graduation from high school and provides instruction and rewarding opportunities, which will benefit the student, community, and nation. JROTC provides education and training in skills, knowledge such as leadership, service-learning, community service, map reading, and goal planning which are useful to students upon graduation from High School. In addition to classroom instruction, cadets are expected to properly wear the JROTC uniform one day per week (Mandatory), and participate in physical training events as required. This is a cooperative effort between the U.S. Army and Smith-Cotton High School.
